Lilian Katz Video

Recently, we had the opportunity to participate in a CAPE webinar with our school Early Years Team (FDK – Grade 2), our administrators, and Parenting Family Literacy Director. Through conversation, we explored the distinction between Intellectual and Academic Goals and how traditional practice has often over emphasized academic goals in early learning and has devalued the Intellectual goals. We really enjoyed this short video featuring Lilian Katz, a Professor Emerita of early childhood education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Here she shares her views about how when we place value on the intellectual goals, children will achieve the academic goals.

We believe this truly speaks to how to create a classroom environment that promotes children’s intellectual growth through play and inquiry.
