Hi, I’m Caroline Thornton.

For more than twenty years, I’ve had the privilege of learning alongside children, families, and fellow educators as an Early Childhood Educator, Educational Resource Worker, and now an elementary teacher. The Learning Sandbox grew from my desire to share practical ideas, thoughtful reflection, and the research that has guided my practice. Whether you’re just beginning your career or have years of experience, I hope you’ll find encouragement, fresh inspiration, and resources you can confidently use in your own classroom.

A Window into Learning

The Fire Truck Project
A growing interest in firefighters inspired this child-led inquiry. Together, the children transformed a cardboard box into a fire truck, launching weeks of imaginative play and meaningful learning.
The Ball Maze
When a child proudly shared a drawing titled Ball Maze, educators recognized an opportunity to build on his thinking. By listening, observing, and responding, a simple sketch grew into a rich inquiry that inspired creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
The Bee Inquiry
A bee’s nest, shared as a classroom provocation, sparked weeks of curiosity and discovery. Guided by the children’s questions, educators listened, observed, and responded, transforming wonder into meaningful inquiry and authentic learning.
