The Learning Sandbox: Volume 1

Professional Digital Edition

It starts with a vision.

The Learning Sandbox: Volume 1 is a practical, research-informed professional guide designed to help educators bridge the vision and theory of Full-Day Kindergarten with everyday classroom practice.

Grounded in Ontario’s vision for Kindergarten, developmental and brain research, the thinking of influential early years leaders, and years of classroom experience, this volume explores what strong Full-Day Kindergarten practice can look like—from building an effective educator partnership and intentionally preparing the learning environment to welcoming children and families and navigating the important first six weeks.

This is not a prescription for one “right” Kindergarten classroom. The ideas, examples, and resources are offered as starting points—inviting educators to reflect, adapt, and respond to the children, families, and learning community in front of them.

Inside Volume 1, you’ll explore:

The vision and foundations of Full-Day Kindergarten
The image of the child and the role it plays in our decisions
Building a strong Teacher–DECE partnership
The learning environment as the third educator
Practical starting points for classroom learning areas
Play, inquiry, relationships, self-regulation, and intentional teaching
Welcoming children and building meaningful partnerships with families
Establishing routines that support independence
Observation and authentic assessment
The rhythm of the Kindergarten day
Extended play, inquiry, transitions, and large-group learning
The first six weeks and building a responsive learning community

From Theory to Practice

Throughout the guide, professional thinking is connected to the everyday decisions educators make—how we organize environments, observe children, work as an educator team, welcome families, support independence, enter children’s play, intentionally teach, and determine where learning might go next.

You’ll find practical classroom examples, reflection questions, educator-team discussion prompts, planning ideas, and 5 downloadable companion resources to help move that thinking into practice.

A Place to Begin

There is no single perfect Full-Day Kindergarten classroom.

Take what resonates. Adapt it. Build on it. Question it.

The goal is not to recreate our classroom. It is to help you imagine the possibilities for yours.
